Goa is probably the most popular destination in India. Known internationally for its beaches and laid back lifestyle, it attracts tourists from within and outside of the country. Little known is the fact that besides the insanely popular flea markets (selling mostly non-local stuff), Goa prides itself in it’s Portuguese heritage. The blue and white Azulejo tiles are one thing a decorating enthusiast must carry home as a souvenir from this charming Indian state.
I love these Azulejo tiles purchased from Velha Goa Galleria in the picturesque area of Fountainhas in Panjim. They are a perfect reminder of Goa’s past and present. The art of Azulejo brings to mind the Portuguese colonial era and the pictures evoke images of modern Goan lifestyle – music, churches, local festivals, the sea and everything else that blends together to give Goa its unique personality.
Standing on their individual wooden easels that came with the purchase, they sit pretty on my bookshelf, reminding me of the beautiful times spent in Goa. After all the praises I have rendered, it will come as little surprise to you that Goa is one of my favorite vacation destinations and I end up there (kids in tow) more often than I probably should!
