Children are complex and layered; as they grow, they will pick up on different perspectives and flourish into functioning adults. If you develop a thorough understanding of why your child thinks and acts the way they do, you will be more equipped to help them in life. All kids are different, so unfortunately there is no ‘one size fits all’ method when it comes to raising children.
Parenting isn’t an easy job and if you have a greater insight into your child’s way of thinking, this will make life much easier. It will help you manage things such as emotional outbursts or even homework difficulties. Rather than simply directing your kid, you can open up a two-way conversation. Here are a few ways that you can connect with your child to better understand their personality and attributes.
Personality Test
A personality test like the Myer-Briggs test can help you determine your child’s strengths and preferences on a personal level. These changes in character can make all the difference when it comes to issues regarding misunderstanding or miscommunication. Your child could fit the personality type of ENFJ meaning that they are empathetic and focused on creating harmony. In relationships, this type of personality needs encouragement and a safe space to voice their feelings. Little indicators like these can help your child feel more comfortable in their environment.
Explore New Hobbies
A great part of a human’s personality is based upon their likes and dislikes. Some people tend to be more creative whilst others enjoy using the more analytical side of their minds. There is no right or wrong way to approach this. However, if you know your child enjoys expressing their emotions through art, this can help you understand how to relieve any stress they may be under.
Have a Mature Conversation
Children are surprisingly intelligent and very emotionally capable, so much so, that they can handle mature conversations. We aren’t suggesting you start talking about politics, however, give them the benefit of the doubt and ask them introspective questions. For example, ask them what makes them feel brave, thankful, or loved. You can even ask them what they like daydreaming about, or about a memory that makes them happy. You’ll be surprised at how much you get to know your kid with a few simple conversations.
All in all, you should take the time to sit down with your kids and get to know them as best as you can. Not only will this bring you closer together, but you will also get a better understanding of what truly makes them tick. Every child is different, so it only makes sense that they respond differently to various ways of learning and thinking. Knowing how your children think will help you nurture and raise them, so make sure you try your best to see things from their perspective. At the end of the day, the most important qualities that you will need in order to raise children are dedication, patience, and a lot of love.
