Navratri is here and has marked the beginning of the festive season! ‘Festive’ in India is synonymous with ‘Sweets’ :). But of course, we are moms and we are forever concerned about the nutrition of our kids. Which is why I am sharing a healthy and nutritious product for the festivals today – Laddoos from Wandering Foodie.
Between super sweet chocolates and sugary mithais, India’s traditional laddoos have been forgotten by our kids. This festive season, let’s re-discover the magic of laddoos! Wandering Foodie brings to us traditional laddoos from different parts of India. They have been enriched with shudh desi ghee and real dry fruits. Some laddoos don’t even contain sugar! They have jaggery instead which makes them even more healthier!
I will tell you more about them as I share pics.
Individual Packaging
I always wondered at the fate of any mithai ordered online. Won’t they be turned upside down and squished by the time they reached me? Apparently not! The first thing to blow me away was their individual packaging. Each single laddoo is sent to you in a ball shaped case so it reaches you intact. No broken laddoos at all! If the rich ghee makes a laddoo stick inside the ball, use a sharp knife to easily slide them out.
The ‘balls’ are perfect to add to the kids lunch boxes and to send Diwali gifts to your relatives online! You can be sure they will reach intact wherever intended for. And the cases are made from 100% recyclable, food-grade virgin polypropylene. Now this is something I like to read!
Regional Recipes
It gave me immense pleasure to introduce each laddoo to my kids. I told them about the different places in India that the laddoos were popular in. The info on the back of the box was an eye-opener for me as well! Laddoos from Wandering Foodie come in these 4 varieties:
1. Daraba Ladoo – Wheat Laddoos from Khandesh in Maharashtra
2. Nachni Ladoo – Ragi Laddoos from Konkan
3. Sattu Ladoo – Sattu and Jaggery laddoos from Bihar
4. Besan Ladoo – Ever popular chickpea flour and sugar laddoos with dry fruits
Healthy and Nutritious
Like I mentioned right in the beginning, these laddoos from Wandering Foodie are a great alternative to oversweet chocolates and mithais. The proportion of sweetness in these laddoos is consciously controlled. And the Sattu laddoos are actually made using jaggery instead of sugar. How nutritious for moms too! I pop in half a laddoo as my guilt-free dessert.
I was skeptical about whether my kids would like them or not. But they loved each one of them! Especially Nachni – it is impossible to get them to eat Nachni. But they enjoyed it in laddoo form. Of course, their favorites still remain Besan laddoos. And mine are the wheat Daraba laddoos :).
If you think your kids’ taste buds are spoiled by sugary sweets, just leave them with no other options than these laddoos and see how they re-discover the fun of laddoos. They will begin loving them as much as we did! No such issues in my house though. I could barely keep them from the laddoos while I took pictures – especially the youngest laddoo-chor!
