My children love to play dress-up games and I am sure yours do too! No doubt it is fun, but there are also a number of reasons why you should encourage role play and dress-up games. It is one of the most popular forms of child play which is hardly surprising.
Dress-up play can also help boost the overall personality of your child in many ways. Here are some life skills that are enhanced by playing dress up.
Encourages Imagination
The mere idea of dressing up as someone to play a role gives wings to any child’s imagination. Their little minds conjure up beautiful images and help them imagine different situations in life.
Dress-Up Boosts Creativity
Dressing up does not require expensive costumes. Just feed your child’s creativity and see what they come up with. Give them whatever you have on hand. Hats, sunglasses, dupattas, sarees, sheets will all be transformed into capes and tents and what not. The kids learn to creatively make use of things they have on hand.
Social Skills to Overcome Shyness
Dressing up is a big confidence booster. Kids who are socially shy could be open to performing in public dressed as their favorite character. Imagining themselves as another person or character will also make them bolder and enhance their social skills.
Respect for All Professions
Dressing up is the Gateway to knowing about different type of people and the work that they do. You can see in my Kidzania Mumbai review, how my kids got to step into the shoes of a policeman, a firefighter, a factory worker, a radio jockey etc. This has given them an insight into how much work goes into each job. The glamour of each profession is now coupled with respect for their hard work.
Knowledge and Vocabulary
All your efforts will not help the kids learn about new things as quickly as one single dress-up game does. They get to know about things such as a baker’s equipment or a dentist’s tools. Their vocabulary will soon begin to include new words related to a profession or about politics if they enact a political leader.
There is no doubt that dressing up and role playing is the most fun way to improve children’s knowledge about many things and enhance their personality. You will actually end up having a great time yourself!
