Before we even know it, we turn around and our kid is 4. We turn around again, they’re 13. We turn around again, they have graduated high school. But what if we could hand them a journal of all of life’s most precious moments when we send them off onto their new journey? Journaling may seem like an act of the past, but with technology, we can capture any moment with the click of a button. Beginning a journal can seem daunting, but with these best practices, you’ll be on your way to journaling like a pro in no time!
Think of journaling as a time of reflection.
Journaling for your child can be a moment of reflection. Whether it be about your day or something big that’s been going on in your child’s life, journaling offers you a time to reflect on life and think about personal growth for yourself or your child. It should be a time of peace to think back about what has been happening.
Write down even the smallest of moments.
While it may seem trivial to write down little things such as quotes or moments your family shared with you throughout the day, it will make your journaling even more personal. We often forget the little things in life, yet sometimes, those are things that bring us the most joy. Try documenting small things throughout your days that bring you joy and put a smile on your face.
Turn your journaling into a habit.
Having a set time each day for you to journal, is a great way to make journaling a habit. It will get you in the routine of journaling every day if you set aside time to think about your day and what is currently happening in your family’s life. Making journaling a habit is the best way to make your writing meaningful and something you enjoy doing.
Take the pressure away from writing.
When journaling, the best thing to do is get your thoughts out onto paper. Don’t pressure yourself into believing you need a huge, meaningful post each time. Jotting down things here and there will still make your entry personal. Take the pressure off of thinking you need to be an amazing writer to start journaling. You don’t need to be! It will make everything so much easier if you use your journal as a place to be yourself.
Just do it!
People often think there is a set way your journal must look, feel, or be, but there is no rulebook for having a great journal. There is no right or wrong way to journal. Just grab a piece of paper (or your Legacy of Love app) and do it. Get your thoughts out and improve along the way. You’ll soon find yourself in a rhythm that is enjoyable and something you look forward to each day!
