Animal Fair by Sharmila Kantha is a fun and educational book for kids aged 5 years and above. It teaches them many basic concepts about Indian farm animals and helps improve their reading skills and vocabulary. Read on for a detailed review of the book.
Book Name: Animal Fair
Author: Sharmila Kantha
Ages: 5 and up
Publisher: Children’s Book Trust
My house is a mini library with every room filled with books. The kids room has an enviable collection of their own. I have been planning to review kids books since long. I am finally starting this feature with a lovely book for little kids – Animal Fair. Author Sharmila Kantha has written this book for pre-schoolers and primary school kids.
Farm Animal Names, Sounds and Shelters
This book by Children’s Book Trust is a fun way to teach your children about farm animals. The interesting story contains mentions of popular farm animals, the sounds they make and their shelters.
The kids will love reading the details over and over again. It is fun to pronounce all the different sounds together :). All the Indian farm animals mentioned in the book are popular with kids – cows, hens, horses, pigs and dogs!
Animal Care
The simple and interesting story teaches children a lot of good values. It stresses upon the fact that it is not enough to just bring a pet home. It is also important to take care of them by feeding them and keeping them clean.
Math Skills
Other than learning about animals, the kids will also have fun adding up all the different animals that Raju and his father purchase in the story 🙂
Easy Language, Big Print
My 6 year old can read the entire book without difficulty and could also read it when he was 5, albeit not so fluently. Younger kids will love to listen to it when read to, by their parents. The story is written in very easy words and the print is very convenient for early readers.
Lovely Illustrations
Illustrations by Ajanta Guhathakurta are kid-friendly and realistic at the same time. They make the book lively and fun to read. All illustrations depict the animals just as we see them in India and the kids are able to relate with the images very easily.
If you have a 5-7 year old whom you want to encourage with reading, ‘Animal Fair by Sharmila Kantha’ would make a lovely book to start with. It is available for a very modest price of INR 30 for a paperback version.

I’ve purchased few books to read for my kids. They swooned over them when they first saw them. This book is tempting me to buy a few more for them now.
