It’s exam time! From Grade 1 to the dreaded (they shouldn’t be!) Board Exams, all students are gearing up for an evaluation of their studies. Two of my kids are of school going age and will be appearing for Std 1 and Std 6 exams in a couple of days from now. I am sharing some exam tips for students that I have been coaching my own kids with.
Exam Tips for Students
1. Start studying well ahead of time, but not too early either. Last minute studies do not help and you will forget what you have learnt 3 months ago. Sit down every single day (for even 30 mins) and revise.
2. Finish studying the easy parts first but do not leave the difficult parts for the end. Break them up in small parts and tackle them bit by bit, every day.
3. If something isn’t clear to you, get it explained by the teacher or parents well in advance.
4. Play and exercise daily. Locking yourself up inside a room to study will only clog your brain by over-working it. Go outside and indulge in physical exercise for at least 30 minutes but not more than 90 minutes. You do not want to tire yourselves and not be able to study later.
5. Do some deep breathing pranayam and meditation every day to keep your mind calm and collected.
6. Pack everything in advance. That includes not only extra pens and pencils but also art and craft supplies for those exams. Last minute packing can make you nervous.
7. When giving the exam, use the reading time to go through the entire paper thoroughly. That is the best way to portion your time and make optimum use of time.
8. Put in your best effort, and then have faith in yourself. Don’t doubt yourself constantly. Keep calm and give it your best shot!
A Small Tip for Moms
Do remember to look beyond their exam performance and see how they have grown as a person during this academic year. Low marks in a subject? Well, they can do better next time. Did they do a good deed during the year? Help a friend? Lead an activity? Don’t forget to praise them for it! An academic year is about more than just good marks. Our kids have to take a step closer to being good and responsible citizens of the world 🙂
I wish your kids all the success in their exams!Â

Really useful tips Lata. Point 4 is very important. They need fresh air. But unfortunately, they study till last minute and underestimate the importance of relaxing time before the exam.

The exam.pressur is a real thing. And I had a hard time setting my goals on a realistic level.
I honk these are great tips. And I always try to remind myself that his performance in any exam is not a reflection of how much he knows. And to trust in my parenting at least a little.
