My mom called today to ask if I could bring the kids to visit her, it being Sunday and all. The thing is, my visits to her have dwindled after moving to a new house. She is missing the kids terribly. What she doesn’t know is that tomorrow is Grandparents Day! I told her it might not be possible, but the kids have planned a surprise for her! They are planning to ambush her tomorrow and take along some homemade gifts – my kids’ special Oreo balls and handmade cards 🙂
Celebrating Grandparents Day
Until a couple of years ago, one or the other kids was in preschool. Our school does a Grandparents Day celebration for preschoolers. Grandparents are invited and they have a fun session with games, activities and various performances by the kids. Since the last two years, nobody is in preschool and the Grandparents Day fun has come to a halt.
Last year, we could not even visit my mom on Grandparents Day who lives in the same city. I can give a thousand excuses, but the reality is that my visits to her place continue without fail everytime I need to leave the kids with her! S-E-L-F-I-S-H is the word that pops up and strangely enough, my mom doesn’t seem to mind at all. Lonely at this stage of life, she longs to welcome her grandchildren.
Well, I plan to make it up this year! Actually, the kids do. I just realized they are growing too fast when they asked me to leave all of tomorrow’s preparations to them.
Oreo Balls – Recipes Kids Can Make
The first thing that the kids planned is to make their favorite recipe – Oreo Balls. After finishing their homework and before going for their swimming, the two huddled together in the kitchen. Little sis was tagging along as always. Until last Diwali, I was handling the mixer but this time, my tween daughter was able to do it on her own.
Here’s their easy recipe if your kids decide to make it too. It involves no cooking and you can help crush/blend the cookies for younger kids.
Oreo Balls Recipe
2 packets Oreo cookies
Amul Milk Cream as needed
How to: Crush the Oreo biscuits in a mixer. Add fresh cream as much as needed to make a pliable mixture. Then make balls out of that mixture. That’s it!
Handmade Cards
The kids also plan to make handmade cards for both sets of Grandparents. I will share their finished cards when they are done 🙂
Origami Butterfly and Flower Cards for Grandparents Day
And there we have it! Our handmade cards that made their way to Grandparents 🙂
The kids first made Origami butterflies and used them to decorate the outside of the cards. On the inside, there was this craft paper flower with the message written on different petals. I thought it was a cute and creative idea! What do you think?
I look forward to hear from you how would you celebrate Grandparents Day.
