Whether your child is going to school for the first time or is used to the hustle and bustle of the place, there are some school safety tips you can always use to make sure that your kids are safe at school.
School Safety Tips
1. Younger kids, from Nursery to Class 2, should know their name, surname, address and phone number. They should also know how to get in touch with you which can be as easy as knowing your office or cell number. All schools have ID cards but in case these get lost, make sure your child memorizes your phone number.
2. Teach your kids to obey traffic rules if walking to the school or up to the bus stop. I have devoted a separate post to school bus safety.
3. It is important to teach your child to not to talk with strangers or accept any food, candy or even rides. This applies to all students from preschoolers to teens.
4. Clothes and other objects with drawstrings are very dangerous and should be avoided. Strings can get caught in playground equipment, bus handrails, or on a bolt and cause accidents.
5. Hold daily conversations with your kids about what happened at school so that you stay updated on all the progress and can nip problems in the bud.
6. Advise older children to never leave their drinks unattended when spending time with friends.
7. Purchase good backpacks and if necessary, provide them with locks to safeguard valuable belongings like technical gadgets. Number combination locks are a good idea. They can be fastened to the school bag zippers and do not need keys that have to be carried around.
8. We like to buy the best school supplies for our kids but it is a good idea to not overdo it. Buying something exceptionally expensive could mean putting your child in danger of getting robbed.
9. At home, use parental controls on your computers to keep track of what websites your kids visit.
10. Educate kids about their body and private parts. This applies to both boys and girls. Explain to them in very clear terms that nobody is supposed to touch them in particular places. Take action immediately if your child reports incidents of bullying or other misbehavior.
