So I was stuck for shoes for my daughter one day. She had to wear something pink and preferably Mary Janes. Unable to find something suitable in her size, I resorted to DIY. I shopped for plain white canvas shoes and armed myself with some basic craft supplies to make her some shoes in time for the party! It is very easy to make DIY painted canvas shoes for yourself or your kids. Here’s how I did it.
What you will need to make DIY Painted Canvas Shoes:
- White canvas school shoes
- Acrylic or Fabric Paints (I used ‘Pearl’ colored pink)
- Fabric or Acrylic Paint Medium
- Sealant or Varnish to Seal the Paint
- Embellishments, if required (I used flat backed stones)
- Tape
How to Paint Canvas Shoes:
I used pretty much what I could find in my craft drawers to make these DIY painted canvas shoes. You can make it in easy steps, and within a couple of hours. You might need more drying time depending upon the weather and how many coats you will need to get the right shade.
- Prepare your shoes by masking with tape the parts which you do not want the paint on. In my case, I covered the edge of the sole with tape.
- Mix paint with medium and apply a thin coat on the entire shoe. Don’t use paint that is too thick as it will crack after drying.
- After letting the paint dry, paint another coat. Repeat till you get your color.
- When the paint is dry, spray a sealant or varnish to seal the paint.
- Use a string glue to glue your embellishments. I glued 3 flat-backed rhinestones on each shoe.
Cracking:
Some amount of cracking in painted shoes is inevitable with use. Mostly, the paint a cracks a little wherever the shoe folds or bends. By using thinner paint, you can reduce the cracking. If you plan to paint a pattern instead of covering the shoe with a single color like I have done, you can plan the pattern in a creative way so that cracks are not seen. You can use darker colors wherever the shoe bends.
Care:
You can wipe the shoes with a damp cloth but do not immerse in water and scrub since it will remove the paint.

Awh this is super cute Lata di 🙂 I’m not just saying that for the giveaway. I find this really useful!
I may not relate to you as I’m not a mother but I relate to you as a writer and a lover of not wasting stuff. It’s good to use old stuff especially just some embellishments can turn things around. Good to be resourceful and use resources at home.
Much love 🙂
