You walk by a store, see a beautiful dress hanging on a mannequin, and think to yourself ‘I must have it.’ Before you got a chance to try it on, you’ve already picked out the shoes to wear with it and the accessories in your collection that will perfect the look. You’ve already imagined how stunning you would look once you try it on, get glammed up, and go out for an event.
When you finally get a chance to try it on and come out of the dressing room, what you see in the mirror, doesn’t quite look like what you expected. If you have experienced this several times, then you may be tired of trying on clothes expecting a miraculous transformation only to see something you didn’t expect. Here are some tips to help you out on your next shopping expedition.
Body Types
One thing to know about women’s dresses is that quite a number of them, look good on certain body types. While every body shape and size is beautiful, the way a dress looks on you depends on your body type. There are several body types such as:
- Apple Body Shape: The upper body is a bit heavier when compared to the lower region. For this body type, your shoulders are broad and the waist isn’t defined.
- Hourglass Body shape: For this body shape, the upper and lower body is proportionate with a well-defined waist.
- Pear Body Shape: For this body shape, the lower part of the body has all the attention. The lower body is bigger than the upper body with the shoulders and bust being smaller in measurements. The waist is also well-defined and distinctive.
- Rectangle Body Shape: This is a common shape with athletic people. The silhouette is straightforward with the upper body, lower body, and waist being proportionate.
Knowing your body type is useful in determining the clothes that suit you best.
Get Measured
If you are not sure about your body type, the best way to figure it out is to get yourself measured. This can easily be done in the comfort of your home with cloth tape. When measuring, the tape should not be too tight or free but comfortable enough.
To get your body type, you would need to measure your shoulders, bust waist, and hips. Measuring your shoulders can be a bit difficult to do on your own so, it is advisable to have someone around you to help with the measurements. To measure your shoulders, start at the top of one shoulder and take it to the other. Make sure that it is straight and you are getting the widest part of your shoulders measured.
To measure the bust, stand straight and put the tape around the fullest part of your bust. You should also be standing straight for your waist measurements and your belly shouldn’t be tucked in.
Dressing for your shape
- Apple Shape: A-line dresses, palazzos, dark colors, and dresses with v-neckline are good for this body type. You may want to avoid figure-hugging dresses and tops unless you are pairing them with a waist belt.
- Hourglass Shape: Almost all outfits look great on an hourglass figure due to the balanced proportions. You can easily rock anything you like with ease. Except you are going for a very casual look, you may want to avoid pairing loose clothes together.
- Rectangle Shape: Wear clothes that accentuate your legs and arms. You can go for layer tops and skirts, A-line dresses, and strapless outfits.
- Pear Shape: Ruffled or patterned tops and linen skirts work well for this body shape. Crop tops or loose tops with skinny jeans help to enhance this figure.
