After an unforgettable journey through Costa Rica, I can attest to the sheer beauty and vibrant culture that this Central American gem offers. From the lush rainforests to the serene beaches, every moment was filled with awe and adventure. However, getting there requires some preparation, particularly when it comes to securing a visa as an Indian citizen. Here’s a firsthand account of what you need to know to ensure your trip is as seamless as mine was.
Understanding Visa Requirements
As an Indian citizen, you must obtain a visa to enter Costa Rica. The visa application process involves several steps and requires specific documents. Here’s a detailed breakdown of what you need to know:
Types of Visas
- Tourist Visa: This visa is for those visiting Costa Rica for leisure, tourism, or short-term family visits.
- Business Visa: If you’re traveling for business purposes such as meetings, conferences, or negotiations, this is the visa you need.
- Student Visa: For Indian students planning to study in Costa Rica, obtaining a student visa is mandatory.
Application Process
Step 1: Gather Required Documents
Before applying for a Costa Rica visa, ensure you have the following documents ready:
- Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Costa Rica.
- Visa Application Form: Complete the visa application form, which can be obtained from the Costa Rican consulate or embassy.
- Photographs: Two Photos not older than 6 months in White Background, without border, 35 x 45 mm size, Face visibility 70 to 75% covering photo frame
- Proof of employment
- Proof of Accommodation for the entire duration of stay in Costa Rica

- Clear Photocopies of all pages of all passports
- Invitation letter if someone has invited you
Step 2: Submit Your Application
Submit your visa application along with the required documents to the nearest Costa Rican consulate or embassy. A travel agent can help you with this. It’s advisable to schedule an appointment in advance to avoid any delays.
Step 3 : Pay the Visa Fee
Pay the applicable visa fee, which varies depending on the type of visa and duration of stay. Ensure you keep the receipt as proof of payment.
Step 4: Wait for Processing
The processing time for a Costa Rica visa can vary, so it’s best to apply well in advance of your planned travel date. Typically, it takes around 10-15 business days for the visa to be processed.
Does Having a US Visa Help?
Indian citizens who hold a valid visa or residence permit from the United States or Canada, are exempt from obtaining a separate Costa Rican visa. They can enter Costa Rica without a visa for a stay of up to 30 days. Ensure your visa or residence permit from the aforementioned countries is valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Costa Rica.
Immigration Process if You Have a US Visa
In my case, I was not required to apply for a Costa Rica visa because I had a US Tourist visa (B1/B2). Here’s what I was asked at the San Jose, Costa Rica Airport :
1. Passport was checked for US visa
2. How many days do you plan to stay in Costa Rica? (I showed my return ticket flying out of the country)
3. Where will you stay? (I showed my pre-booked, prepaid hotel bookings)
That’s it…. Welcome to Costa Rica!
Tips for a Successful Application
- Apply Early: Start the application process at least a month before your intended travel date to account for any unforeseen delays.
- Double-Check Documents: Ensure all documents are complete and accurate to avoid any issues during the application process.
- Follow Instructions: Adhere to the guidelines provided by the Costa Rican consulate or embassy to ensure a smooth application process.
Traveling to Costa Rica turned out to be one of the most enriching experiences of my life. By following the outlined steps and ensuring all necessary documents are in order, you can secure your visa and look forward to exploring the beauty and culture of Costa Rica.
