Miami’s South Beach is an iconic destination that most travelers dream of visiting, even if only for a day. If you’re in Miami for a cruise or a short layover, you can still experience its stunning beaches, vibrant nightlife, and famous Art Deco architecture—without breaking the bank. The secret? Using Miami’s budget-friendly and even free public transportation to maximize your time and money.
Here’s how I spent 24 hours in South Beach while also squeezing in some beach hopping—all for just a few dollars.
Morning: Beach Hopping at Haulover Beach
After enjoying the complimentary buffet breakfast at my hotel, I set off for Haulover Beach, known for its pristine white sand and relaxed vibe. To get there, I hopped on Metrobus Route 100 (Beach Express), which costs just $2.25 one way. The bus is air-conditioned, has free WiFi, and runs frequently. You can check the latest timings and route map on Miami-Dade Transit’s official website.

Exploring Haulover Beach
The bus dropped me off in the Haulover Park parking lot, from where I took a short walk to the family-friendly sectionof Haulover Beach. This beach is stunning—calm waters, soft sand, and fewer crowds compared to South Beach.

Do note that from Lifeguard Tower 12 to 16, Haulover Beach is clothing-optional. If you’re planning to visit this section, here are a few dos and don’ts:
✅ Do: Respect people’s privacy, bring a towel to sit on, and be open-minded.
❌ Don’t: Stare, take photos, or act in a way that makes others uncomfortable.

After spending a few hours soaking in the sun, I took the same bus back to South Beach. If you have more time, you can hop off at North Beach, Mid Beach, or even Bal Harbour for luxury shopping. I, however, admired the sights from the bus—including the celebrity homes along Indian Creek—and went straight back to South Beach to make the most of my day.
Midday: Ocean Drive & Lunch Break
Back in South Beach, I continued my beach experience on the famous South Beach itself. The water was warm, and the vibe was lively, with people playing volleyball, sunbathing, and enjoying the waves.

Ocean Drive Art Deco Buildings
After some beach time, I took a walk along Ocean Drive, the heart of South Beach’s Art Deco District. The colorful pastel buildings, palm trees, and vintage cars make it a photographer’s paradise. I also took the classic photo in front of the “Miami Beach” sign before heading back to my hotel for a budget-friendly lunch.

💡 Budget Tip: I packed some fruits from the hotel’s breakfast buffet and had a ready-to-eat meal for lunch—saving money for a nice dinner later.
Afternoon: Exploring South Beach with the Free Trolley
South Beach is large, and exploring it all on foot in one day is unrealistic. Instead of paying for tours, I used Miami’s Free Trolley, an absolute lifesaver for budget travelers! The trolley is air-conditioned, has free WiFi, and stops at all the major attractions in South Beach.
First Stop: Collins Park & Miami Mountain

I then rode the trolley to Española Way, a charming pedestrian street with European-style buildings, glowing string lights, and lively restaurants. I recommend visiting in the evening when the ambiance is at its best. Even if you don’t dine here, just walking through is a treat.
