Making memories together as a family by travelling is so exciting, but lets be honest, it’s incredibly daunting too. Little ones can always be a bit unpredictable, and when you disrupt their routine and add in long travel times into the mix, meltdowns can sometimes occur. But don’t let these kinds of thoughts put you off, the pros very much outweigh the cons when it comes to family travel you just have to accept that it might not be ‘perfect’ (or peaceful at times!) Here are some of the ways to make life a little easier.
Get Ready Early
Start off by creating a checklist well before your travel date. Note down essentials such as clothing, snacks, entertainment, and any special items your little ones can’t do without. Having a plan in place will help you stay organized and reduce last minute stress. Don’t forget the important documents like passports, tickets and any necessary medical information too. Figure out if you’ll need to use luggage storage, bring a pram or car seat with you and everything else. When you have everything done ahead of time it can take a weight off your shoulders and you can go on your trip knowing that everything has been thought about and sorted already.
Snack Smart
Having snacks for kids is such an important part of travelling. Even if you don’t like using food as a distraction tool, times like this it can be really useful especially if your kids are getting bored and agitated. Having your own snacks on hand means they stay fed too, even if there’s nothing they like on the journey whether that’s airplane food or at a station! Hungry kids are grumpy kids so things like cereal bars, crackers, biscuits and plenty of drinks are all a good idea.
Entertainment Essentials
Keep your little ones entertained with a mix of activities, consider packing a tablet or portable gaming device as this is likely to hold their intertest for longer on long journeys. Books, colouring and small toys can also be worth their weight in gold, anything that buys you an hour of peace on a long journey. Don’t forget to bring power banks with you so you can keep everything charged up.
Comfort is Key
Make the travel experience comfortable for your little ones by dressing them in comfy clothes, bring travel pillows and blankets and even a lightweight stroller for easy navigation through airports- even if your little one doesn’t use the stroller much any more its worth it on these occasions. Check with your airline regarding what their stroller policies are and any special accommodations they offer for families with young children.
Embrace Flexibility
Despite meticulous planning, it’s always worth being prepared for the unexpected. Flexibility is key to navigating these moments so stay calm and adaptable, and encourage a positive mindset within your family. Tantrums will happen, nappy explosions might occur at the wrong moment, you might get on the wrong train or bus- anything could happen. Embrace the journey as part of the adventure, and remember that creating lasting memories sometimes involves detours from the original plan!
Have you travelled with your small children before? What advice would you give to parents about to do this for the first time?
